I have just got wind of news about DBKL’s plans for Bukit Kiara.

Fakawi Tribe and KLMBH both have forum topics on same subject:

Reading through the Fakawi and KLMBH forum it was pointed out about DBKL’s plans for the public use of Kiara.

As you may or may not know us MTBers have had free reign over the area to build trails, jumps and go anywhere we like.

text below taken from KLMBH forum.

- DBKL has a master plan for Kiara, at least the 300 or so acres that they have jurisdiction over. There does not appear to be a firm timetable for the plan, but there appears to be firm commitment to it.

- The plan does appear to incorporate a "Jungle Trail" but in no way does it seem to include mountain biking the way we think of it. Under the existing plan most of the trails would disappear. Kiara would be cleared of Rubber Trees and replanted with native Malaysian trees in stages. In essence it would get a complete makeover.

- DBKL has no real idea what mountain bikers want for trails or that Kiara has become one of the top places in Malaysia to ride.

- There is some degree of flexibility in the plan and if we state our cause and show support for it there may be ways to get involved with implementing it.

- If we want to be taken seriously then we will get more attention with a common voice: an association.

- If we don't get involved we are likely to be shut out entirely.

So with this possibility looming, we need to act now and mobilize our “voice” for the mountain biking community – that includes beginners, families, downhill, freeride, north shore and cross country riders.
There will be gathering of riders this Saturday 8pm at Devi’s Corner, Sri Hartamas to show support and to forms an association that which we might voice our views and desires through to DBKL.

On the agenda to discuss is:

- do we have enough interest in this to form some kind of association?

- do we have someone who wants to lead?

- should the association be only for the sake of Kiara or perhaps all of the Klang Valley?

- is it capable of speaking for all mountain bikers? XC, Freeride, Downhill? Should it?

- should it be constrained to only riders or all trail users?

If we want to keep some form of decent trails and access for out bikes in Kiara we need this.
It’s not one of those things we can just leave for someone else to sort out as it won’t happen.

My thoughts are that we MTBers will have to be a little flexible to our wants. We can't have it all our own way and try to keep it all to ourselves. Horses, Joggers, "Jungle" Trekkers alike have the right to do their stuff too.

Looking at the UK and other trail controlled countries, trails across the land are marked and designated for walkers, horses, and bikers and they keep to their own sections. This avoids the inevitable collisions. If DBKL agrees to this we must also maintain and plan them ourselves or they might lay down gravel tracks for us to do "mountain biking" on.

Bring yourself, your views and suggestions this Saturday. If you do it on two wheels and like Kiara your views will be welcome.

Wow, I think Pat is right. we should do something. Forming a Kiara Mountain Bike Association seems like a good idea. I would be keen to attend the meeting. Perhaps we can also post this meeting in our next spokes and nipples to see who else is interested to attend.
