Typically there are 2 types of popular bikes. Mountain bikes/ MTB (or also known as all-terrain bikes/ ATB) and road bikes. If you want to take up cycling as a hobby and sport eventually but are unsure of your preferences (road vs offroad or both), as Kompressor dude said...maybe u can borrow the Club's MTB temporarily.
Generally, most of us started off with a MTB. Any MTB worth it's salt should set you back a minimum of RM1600. There are cheaper bikes around, of course; but if you are serious about the sport, you will be spending more money on an upgrade in no time.
MTB can be used on both road and offroad, you just need to change the knobby tires to slick tires for road use. As such, it is more versatile. However, as it is heavier than a road bike, it will require more effort to keep up with a road bike. Road bikes have lighter weight frames and skinny tires. But their application is reserved for road. Most avid bikers have both bikes.
My suggestion is the same as Kompressor dude. Use the Club's mtb first. Come and ride with us...dun worry PCC is a newbie-friendly club...and like the marines motto, we never leave anyone behind....(er, eve tho you might be riding behind mostly..hehehehe). Try both our Mud n Dirt (offroad) rides and also our Tar n Grime (road) rides. Then you can make up your mind as to which bike to get.
Hope this helps.
